the politics of a headache…

21Jan07

The husband is writing a paper on radical Islam’s view of the end times. Now, I think most eschatology is pretty weird to start with but the president of Iran, Mahmood Ahmadinejad, is a whole other thing unto himself. Along with his view that the world’s going to end really soon. (And that the mahdi [reformer] imam is coming back.)

Moqtada al-Sadr thinks that the US has invaded Iraq and Afghanistan in order to prevent the return of the mahdi, or hasten the return of the mahdi so we can defeat him , or something like that. [I get confused sometimes.] Now, apart from my normal dislike of bush and insistence that he’s not that intelligent, I don’t think anyone in the bush camp really thinks the mahdi is coming tomorrow (or before the spring equinox…). Al- Sadr also thinks that we’re collecting a file on the mahdi, all we need now is his picture. Uhuh. Apparently the mahdi lives at the bottom of a well in Jamkaran (in Iran in the province of Khorusan, where, according to the prophet and tradition, the Mahdi is to gather the army of the black flags and march west to capture Jerusalem and defeat the anti-Christ). [How can you defeat the anti-Christ when you don’t believe in Christ?]

[“Did I mention there’s magic rocks?”]

More than I ever wanted to know about the mahdi, all because I found an obscure reference somewhere to the fact that Ahmadinejad wants to hasten the end of the world. And that is the al-Sadr of the death squad in Iraq. Happy huh?

So in conclusion, [politics and religion don’t mesh well] it’s a good thing that the same ayatollah, Khamenei [not the dead leader of the Iranian revolution], has his job in Iran, because the other guy supports Ahmadinejad and his crack addiction and we have a dossier on the Imam who lives at the bottom of a fucking well.

Whatever drugs these people are on I want to know why they can’t share.
